Long-term and short-term disability, health benefits, life insurance and accidental death benefits are the most common types of employee benefits, most of which are governed by ERISA (Employee Retirement Security Act of 1974). The ERISA statute, its accompanying regulations and the ever-changing body of case law make for a complex path for claimants and their lawyers to navigate successfully.
