The duties to clients -- especially when representing parents in family court -- involves more than just confidentiality, competence and diligence. Counsel for parents accused of abuse and neglect must also focus on avoiding bias and be adept in trauma-informed practices and of course we must also be truly compassionate in our work. This breakout will examine all of the duties and the pitfalls as well as expectations and limitations around a solid and meaningful practice of helping those who really need our skill, advocacy and compassion.
Attendees will be reminded of, and afterward, able to be more mindful of their ethical duties to clients in the family court setting including those greater human duties that are not enumerated in our ethics rules.
Speaker: Laurie V. Snell, Attorney at Law, Kansas City
