LUNCH PRESENTATION | Perpetuating the Presumption of Guilt: Implicit Racial Bias in Forensic Testimony (Qualifies for 1.0 Ethics & 1.0 Bias hours)

In this session, attendees will learn how implicit racial bias can affect forensic opinions and create bias that may result in a wrongful conviction. Ms. Puracal will discuss the research behind implicit racial bias, how that bias can affect decision making for the government's forensic witnesses, and how attorneys can address the bias in their cases, including on cross-examination. Ms. Puracal will also talk about systemic reforms to mitigate bias in forensics.

Speaker: Janis C. Puracal, Forensic Justice Project, Portland, OR (joining live virtually)
