The recent passage (and veto) of the "Viking Cremation" bill has raised interest from a lot of people in what can and cannot be done in Missouri without involving a funeral director. This seminar will cover the following issues regarding people who might come to you wanting to "do it themselves." Don Otto, General Counsel of the Missouri Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association will cover the laws and regulations regarding the following:

Don Otto was admitted to practice law in 1986 and is a member of the Missouri Bar. He was on the MoBar Elder Law Committee and helped with the drafting of the MoBar Power of Attorney (POA) form.

Mr. Otto has been the Executive Director and General Counsel of the Missouri Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association (MFDEA)  and Chief Operating Officer of the Missouri Funeral Trust (MFT) for fifteen years. The Missouri Funeral Trust is owned by the MFDEA. Mr. Otto has been involved in the drafting and amending of many of the statutes and regulations regarding the funeral industry. He has represented the MFDEA, MFT and individual funeral homes in front of the Missouri State Board, the Administrative Hearing Commission and State and Federal courts. He has also been a guest speaker at the University of Missouri School of Law, a presenter at the annual Missouri Coroners meeting on Missouri Laws and Regulations, a frequent commentator to news outlets in Missouri and nationally including the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Kansas City Star, New York Times, the Washington Post, numerous Missouri television stations and CNN on issues related to the funeral profession. Mr. Otto teaches a class on Missouri Funeral Law each month at the MFDEA office in Jefferson City, Missouri.
