This program is designed for mediators who would like to learn techniques and strategies to help the parties reach an agreement.  We will touch on different methods for a successful mediation including the ethical considerations for mediators. 

Topics to include: 

  • Strategies to effectively address common concerns, issues, and obstacles that mediators face
  • Suggested ways for a mediator to prepare for mediation
  • How to stay in the role of “mediator” and maintain neutrality
  • What to do when one party is represented by counsel and the other is not
  • When to caucus individually with the parties and tips for effectively using that tool
  • A look at The Rules of Professional Conduct as they relate to mediation as well as those that may arise in a fee dispute resolution mediation

Sam Stragand is a staff attorney at the Metropolitan St. Louis Equal Housing & Opportunity Council, the only non-profit non-governmental fair housing organization in the State of Missouri. He represents individuals, families, and his organization in housing discrimination administrative complaints and lawsuits in state and federal court in Missouri and Illinois. He received his J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis and continues to work with the law school in multiple capacities, including as an externship supervisor, an adjunct professor, and a coach of the intercollegiate Representation in Mediation team. Sam also manages the St. Louis Pro Bono Mediation project, which offers mediation services at the pro se eviction court dockets in St. Louis City and County.
