He has vast experience in the telecommunications, commodities, manufacturing and distribution, information technology, governmental and not-forprofit, textiles, construction, banking, health care, reinsurance and insurance agency, professional services, mortgage banking, agribusiness and brokerage industries.
In addition to his auditing work, Steve also handles highly complex forensic and fraud investigations. As of late 2019, he has incurred more than 15,000 hours directing numerous litigation and valuation engagements involving extensive preparation or analysis of damage calculation models, contract disputes and breaches, corporate veil issues, bankruptcies, and business and asset valuation models.
Steve has also served as liaison between computer programmers and operations management in developing system business rules/logic and implementing financial reporting requirements. In addition, he has directed dozens of fraud investigations involving extensive forensic accounting procedures, conducting interviews with suspected perpetrators and other client personnel and coordination of efforts and evidence with law enforcement authorities.
Steve is regularly called upon to serve as an expert witness for the federal government and the attorneys general of Kansas and Missouri, as well as several Fortune 500 companies and privately held organizations. He testifies on issues ranging from economic damage claims and business valuation to white collar crime and fraud.
A previous speaker and instructor for the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he has instructed dozens of continuing professional education courses for accountants and lawyers.
Steve received his Bachelor of Science in finance and accounting from Kansas State University and his master’s degree in economics from the University of Missouri – Kansas City.

In his day-to-day work, Meara Welch Browne, P.C. Audit and Consulting Manager Preston Herman manages and performs external audits, reviews, compilations and other agreed-upon procedures. Preston primarily works with companies in the manufacturing and distribution, engineering, governmental and not-for-profit, textile, construction, health care, insurance and renewable energy industries.
He is also a Certified Public Accountant, licensed in Missouri and Kansas, and is accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
In his accounting and audit work, Preston manages and performs annual employee benefit plan audits; prepares financial statements and footnote disclosures in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP); and reviews accounting processes and internal controls and makes recommendations for process improvements resulting in increased efficiency and stronger controls.
In addition to his audit and accounting work, Preston also participates in numerous litigation and valuation engagements involving extensive preparation or analysis. This includes analysis of damage calculation models, contract disputes and breaches, corporate veil issues, bankruptcies, and business and asset valuation models, among others. Preston graduated from Kansas State University, summa cum laude, with a degree in business administration: accounting and finance, with a minor in economics. He is currently pursuing a master’s in economics from the University of Missouri.

Cara L. Smith is a Senior Tax Manager at Meara Welch Browne, P.C., where she focuses on preparing and reviewing federal and state tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporate entities and exempt organizations. She also consults on tax matters involved in business litigation, mergers and acquisitions, and estate tax and gift tax transactions, and represents clients under audit with the Internal Revenue Service.
As a Certified Financial Planner and a Certified Public Accountant, Cara advises clients on tax planning issues including fringe benefits, retirement plans and tax credits, among various other issues.
