Tenants being represented by an attorney in eviction proceedings is a recent development in the state of Missouri. This program will provide the foundations of affirmative defenses and counterclaims available to tenants in eviction court and how associate circuit courts approach filings by defendants.

John Michael Pipes is an eviction defense attorney at Heartland Center for Jobs and Freedom. He represents tenants through Kansas City's Right to Counsel Program. He graduated from UMKC with his bachelor's degree in political science and history as well as his JD. He interned for United States District Court's Hon. Roseann Ketchmark, a bankruptcy law firm, and the Heartland Center as a 1L intern. A lifelong Missourian, John Michael enjoyed growing up in rural Plattsburg but now makes his home in the heart of Kansas City with his wife, Lucille, son, and two cats.
