As human beings, our brains are wired to make cognitive shortcuts based on our previous experiences and unconscious assumptions. Angela will discuss how implicit cognitive biases can negatively affect the ability of attorneys and their clients to effectively interpret information and make objective decisions in the mediation context, including ways to raise our own awareness of implicit biases and potentially improve our decision-making abilities.

With 30 years of legal experience, Angela Gupta serves as a Mediator, Arbitrator, and Special Master in complex civil litigation and employment-related matters with Associates in Dispute Resolution, LLC. Angela previously practiced law in two Kansas City law firms and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where she handled cases involving commercial, employment and bankruptcy law, and she also served as chambers counsel to Judge Kathryn H. Vratil in the District of Kansas federal court.  Angela is an Approved Mediator in the State of Kansas and in the District of Kansas and Western District of Missouri federal courts.  Angela also serves as an Arbitrator on the commercial, employment, and consumer panels for the American Arbitration Association (AAA) and has been appointed as a Special Master in litigation pending in the District of Columbia federal court.
