Total Credits: 1.0 MCLE, 1.0 Ethics, 1.0 Elimination of Bias

Dates

Description

This program was originally presented at our 2025 MOSOLO Small Firm Conference, June 5-7, 2025.

Attorneys face an increasing crisis to maintain an open pathway to social justice and provide equal access to the justice system. Our Professional Code of Conduct states that we are to advocate for social justice and equal access to the legal system. There are blockades that may stand in the way of being a beacon of legal hope. One such obstacle is implicit bias. Implicit bias occurs in every fabric of society and culture. Everyone possesses implicit bias. As attorneys, implicit bias may affect our cultural competence when we counsel clients and how clients react to us as attorneys. Compounding attorney's implicit bias is the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Let’s take a deep dive into the two A's, the attorney's implicit bias and the use of AI in the legal system.

Learning objectives:

  • Understanding the role of ethics in cultural competence and implicit bias.
  • Deepen reflection on implicit bias as it relates to client representation.
  • How Artificial Intelligence is integrated into the practice of law.
  • Understanding the implicit bias that exists in Artificial Intelligence.
  • Best practices and strategies for attorney use of A.I.
