As we constantly pour ourselves into our work, the focus is typically on the client, the facts and the law. Rarely do lawyers recognize the cumulative effect that years of conflict and dark subject matter have on us. This session identifies the mental, emotional and physiological effects that family law has on our psyche, and discusses some practical coping mechanisms that can help mitigate those effects.

9:55 – 10:46 AM | Teens & GALs - How to Navigate Teens' Wishes v. Their Best Interests  
This session provides guidance to GALs navigating the murky waters of when a child's wishes are contradictory to the child's best interest. The speaker examines who the GAL represents and how to comply with the GAL standards, with particular emphasis on relating to young children and teens in foster care, under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court.

This Advanced Guardian ad Litem training will discuss home visits in detail. Participants will learn in which cases a home visit should be conducted, discuss announced versus unannounced visits, safety of you and of your client, and how to effectively follow up after a home visit. Common concerns of identifying drugs and drug paraphernalia and the classification of unsanitary conditions will be covered.

Mr. Fredrick received his Bachelors in Business Administration and Juris Doctor from UMKC, a Certificate of Comparative Law from Peking University in Beijing, China, his Masters in Military Science and Joint Airpower through Arizona State University, and graduated from the United States Army’s Judge Advocate General School of Law and the Air Force’s Squadron Officer School. 
He practiced law at Fredrick, Rogers and Vaughn, P.C. for five years before starting his own law firm in 2008. His practice has historically been focused on family law, real estate, business transactions and litigation, and appeals in both the Missouri Court of Appeals and Missouri Supreme Court. He is now a full-time professor in the Breech School of Business at Drury University and focuses his law practice primarily on serving as a Guardian Ad Litem and conducting mediations.
Mr. Fredrick has authored several publications, including the first and second edition of Military Issues in Family Law (MoBar). His article titled “Cryptocurrency And Blockchain; Here We Go Down The Rabbit Hole” was published in the Missouri Bar Journal, and republished in the Wisconsin Bar Journal, Family Law Lawyer Magazine, and Computer and Internet Lawyer Journal. He has served on many charitable boards and Missouri Bar committees, and routinely teaches CLE seminars on a variety of topics. Mr. Fredrick served as head coach of Drury University’s NCAA Women’s Triathlon program for four years, served in the Army Reserves as a JAG officer for six years, and has served in the Air Force Reserves since 2012.
