Athletes require high levels of physical and mental energy and motivation in order to perform at their best. To make sure of this they spend time before the game and after the game ensuring all areas of their practice are on point. They work on both their physical health and mental health.

Whether attorneys suffer their own trauma, or have clients who have been exposed to trauma, understanding the ethical and practical considerations of trauma is essential. The presentation will include perspectives as a litigator, client, neutral, arbitrator, and advisor, and how viewing trauma through various lenses can improve access to justice, judicial efficiency, and lawyer and client well-being.

1-3 p.m. | The lawyers in balance: Techniques for stress management and emotional resilience
Legal practitioners face unique challenges that often lead to stress and emotional strain. This transformative workshop is tailored specifically for lawyers, focusing on building resilience and utilizing HeartMath (Heart Rate Variability training) techniques to maintain emotional equilibrium amidst the high-pressure demands of the legal profession. Lawyers will learn the same practices taught at NASA and throughout the world where high performance and high stakes go hand in hand.

Mary Beth has been sober since 1994. Her story is chronicled in her memoir From Junkie to Judge: One Woman’s Triumph Over Trauma and Addiction. She’s had essays in such publications as The Wall Street Journal and Recovery Today.
Mary Beth is a Director for She Recovers Foundation and LifeRing Secular Recovery. She regularly speaks on behalf of these organizations and about multiple and secular paths to recovery. She develops relationships with other organizations, such as Women for Sobriety. And Mary Beth trains attorneys and medical professionals about substance use disorder and recovery.
In recovery, Mary Beth attended Berkeley Law. In 2014 she was appointed a federal Administrative Law Judge, from which position she retired early in 2020.
Sheila Pride is the CEO of The Moksha Group.
Sheila Pride is a strategic business partner for organizations working to elevate leadership and team capacity within organizations. Sheila is a licensed trauma therapist, leadership coach, international educator and has 15 years of business leadership coaching and enterprise wide consulting in her background. She specializes in offering culture shaping, communication training, resiliency and burnout prevention and specializes in supporting high conflict teams successfully resolving their issues. She is a certified in Safe Conversations, Heartmath Institute, UpLedger Institute, & Somatic Therapies.
Michael Reed currently serves as Assistant General Counsel in the Office of General Counsel for the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. Michael received his law degree from Villanova University, Charles Widger School of Law. Before the practice of law, Michael served in the United States Army as an infantry soldier.
Tim Roldan is a professional hybrid with graduate and post-graduate educational tracks, training, and experience in the Biopsychosocial Model (Social Work), Law, and Psychodynamic Theory. He maintains private practices as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and also as a Licensed Attorney. Tim is a Certified Clinical Social Work Supervisor, and provides Ethics Mediation, nationally for the NASW Leadership, and serves as a Board Member for the NASW-MO. As an Attorney he is Certified in Health Law and Labor Law, a Certified GAL, a Mediator, a Parent Coordinator, provides forensic supervision, consultations, and forensic services for therapists across the State of Missouri. He is also the recipient of the Family Rights and Equal Parenting Award (2022): “Award and Leadership Recognition For Equal Parenting & Family Court Reform Advocacy.”
Tim’s expertise in cross-disciplinary integration offers him insights in a number of areas within the Mental Health and Legal Professions. His focus on Social Justice advocacy is client-centered, and with his unique qualifications, he is in development of innovative approaches in civil litigation, psychological damages and psychological autopsy, Systems Psychodynamics, and pertaining to psychotherapeutic tools & theory based on the systemic nexus that may lay hidden, yet are embedded, within psychotherapeutic processes and litigation.
Laurel Stevenson is the Director of the Mediation and Assessment Program (MAP) for the United States District Court, Western District of Missouri. She oversees approximately 1,000 civil cases annually and serves as a mediator and facilitator. Laurel has conducted hundreds of mediations, including more than 300 via Zoom. Her ADR work includes class actions, insurance, FLSA, employment, wrongful death, transportation, medical malpractice, and commercial disputes. Several resolutions have resulted in institutional policy changes. She also co-chairs the ABA’s Court ADR Committee within the DR Section and is the Editor of The Resolver, a publication of the FBA’s ADR Section.
Prior to her current position, Laurel tried more than eighty jury trials to verdict, served as appellate counsel, was lead trial counsel in numerous bench trials, and taught trial practice in Missouri and Texas. She served more than a decade as a Facilitator for the Missouri Bar Complaint Resolution Program and the Fee Dispute Resolution Program. She also served as a mediator, arbitrator, and facilitator during her last twelve years in private practice.
